Akshay Shinde, 23, accused of raping two nursery school girls in Badlapur, died after a shootout with police inside a vehicle. Authorities claim Shinde seized a constable’s gun, firing multiple rounds and injuring the officer. Police retaliated, critically injuring Shinde, who later succumbed to his wounds. The incident occurred while police transported Shinde from Taloja Jail to Badlapur for questioning in a new case filed by his first wife, alleging rape and assault. She had left him just five days after their wedding.

Shinde’s troubles began on August 1, when he was hired to clean school washrooms on a contractual basis. Within days, he allegedly raped two four-year-old girls in the school’s washroom. Arrested on August 17, five days after the children reported the assault to their parents.

Family demands answers

Shinde’s parents strongly reacted to his death, with his mother disputing police claims and expressing doubts about the circumstances. She insisted her son was innocent, citing his gentle nature and inability to commit such acts. She believed false accusations led to his demise, pointing out that he continued working despite allegations.Shinde’s mother pleaded for justice, emotionally appealing for truth and accountability. She asked authorities to consider her family’s pain, reflecting their shock and despair.

Opposition expresses skepticism

The incident sparked a controversy ahead of Maharashtra’s assembly elections. The Opposition has expressed skepticism, alleging a staged encounter and demanding a judicial inquiry. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended the police’s actions and criticising opposition leaders for shifting stances.Opposition leaders, including Vijay Wadettiwar and Sharad Pawar, question the official narrative, citing concerns over the handling of the transfer and potential destruction of evidence. Shiv Sena (UBT) Spokesperson Sushma Andhare drew parallels with a 2019 Telangana encounter, suggesting the truth may never come out.
