What happened in the last 10 minutes?

Accused Akshay Shinde snatched assistant police inspector (API) Nilesh More’s service revolver while the vehicle was passing near Mumbra Bypass. He then fired three rounds at More. A bullet hit More’s thigh. Two bullets went past him. More also injured Akshay Shinde after he was shot at.

Accused Akshay Shinde and API More were sitting in the back seat of the car. Senior police inspector Sanjay Shinde was sitting beside the driver (in the front). When he heard gunshots, Sanjay Shinde took out his own revolver in self-defense and shot Akshay Shinde. The bullet hit Akshay Shinde in the face and Akshay Shinde died on the spot.

Akshay Shinde was then taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa, where he was declared dead. On Monday evening, the accused body was taken to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for post-mortem examination.

Who were in the police car?

Four members of the police force, including two officers and two others, were travelling in the car when Akshay Shinde opened fire. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had said a few days ago that the hearing in the Badlapur case is going on at a fast pace. The Chief Minister had also said that all the guilty will be punished. But the death of Akshay Shinde in the encounter has raised many questions.

What did Akshay Shinde’s mother say?

Ala Shinde, Akshay Shinde’s mother, rubbished the version of the police. She said, ‘Police shot him deliberately. He and I had a talk today. He was telling me, my charge sheet has come, now I will be released. He couldn’t even burst firecrackers (he feared Diwali crackers), how could he take a gun and shoot from it? The police have killed him deliberately…’
