New Delhi: In a shocking incident, Shiromani Akali Dal councillor Harjinder Singh Bahman was shot dead in broad daylight on Sunday by unidentified bike-borne assailants in Amritsar.
According to Punjab Police, the incident took place when Bahman, a councillor from the Jandiala Guru assembly constituency, was on his way to a hotel after attending a religious function at Chheharta Sahib Gurudwara. At that time, a motorcycle carrying three to four people approached him and opened fire. According to reports, two masked men stopped near him, with one of them alighting and firing five to six rounds. The councillor collapsed on the spot and succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to the hospital.
Second attack in a fortnight
Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Harpal Singh Randhawa confirmed the attack while speaking to the media: “While Harjinder Singh was on his way, a motorcycle carrying three to four individuals approached him and opened fire. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.”
Randhawa further said that, the victim’s brother and brother-in-law alleged that the attackers were the same individuals who had previously targeted Bahman. They claimed that earlier this month, on the intervening nights of May 12 and 13, unknown persons had fired shots at Harjinder Singh’s residence and issued threats, prompting the councillor to lodge a formal police complaint.
Police investigation underway
The police have begun a thorough investigation into the killing. Bullets were recovered from the scene, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the culprits. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined, and additional security has been deployed in the region.
