Air India, IndiGo issue passenger advisory after Pakistan closes airspace

New Delhi: The terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, triggered a swift response from Pakistan, resulting in the closure of its airspace to Indian airlines. This action immediately impacted numerous flights, causing considerable disruption for passengers and airlines alike. Major Indian carriers, such as Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, were forced to reroute flights, significantly extending travel times.

These airlines responded by issuing comprehensive travel advisories to inform passengers about the changes and their impact on scheduled flights. These advisories, disseminated through various channels, including social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), detailed the altered flight paths, potential for increased travel times, and possibility of unexpected technical stops at intermediate airports.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India played a crucial role in managing the situation. It issued detailed guidelines for airlines to follow, focusing primarily on passenger welfare and transparency. These guidelines mandated proactive communication with passengers, advising them of the revised flight plans well in advance of departure. The DGCA stressed the importance of clearly explaining the reason for any changes, including the need for unscheduled stops, reassuring passengers that these were operational necessities and not indicative of any safety concerns. Airlines were required to relay this information across multiple touchpoints, including during check-in, at boarding gates, and through SMS or email alerts.

The airspace closure had a considerable economic impact, particularly on passengers stranded in the Kashmir Valley. The sudden surge in demand for flights out of Srinagar resulted in a sharp increase in airfares to major Indian cities. Stranded tourists faced significantly higher costs to return home. In response to this, SpiceJet introduced waivers for rescheduling and cancellations on tickets booked before or on 22nd April, offering some relief to affected travellers. The incident highlights the significant consequences of geopolitical events on civil aviation and the importance of effective communication and passenger management during times of crisis. The situation serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of global events and their immediate influence on daily life.
