New Delhi: Days after the Air India flight AI171 crashed on June 12, the plane’s second black box has been recovered, as per officials probing the incident, PTI reported.
The cockpit voice recorder has been recovered, along with the flight data recorder that was found earlier. These will help investigators detect the cause of the deadly crash that killed about 270 people, including 241 of the 242 people on the plane.
Officials have told PK Mishra, principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, that the black boxes have been recovered. On Sunday, Mishra visited the Air India crash site in Ahmedabad. He also went to the civil hospital where the injured are undergoing treatment.
In an official release, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) said: “Chairing a high-level review meeting at Circuit House, here Dr Mishra discussed ongoing relief, rescue, and investigation efforts with senior officials from the Central and State Governments, AAIB, and Airports Authority of India.”
It added: “Officials confirmed to Dr Mishra that the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) have been located and secured.”
The release said that the AAIB has started a detailed probe, and the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is carrying out a parallel investigation under international protocols, as the aircraft is American-made.
After having visited the crash site, Mishra said, “I am very pained by the enormity of the tragedy. Everybody is sad. It is our duty to share grief and express our feelings for the victims.”
