Ahmedabad: In a tragic incident last Thursday, an Air India plane carrying 242 people onboard crashed near Ahmedabad airport. Of them 241 people including 12 crew members lost their lives and one person was injured. As per reports, the death toll so far has mounted to at least 274 including locals who were staying in the locality.
Among the passengers was Jaishri Patel (27), who was going to London to be with her husband for the first time since their marriage. Her husband is working in London in the Healthcare sector. Before she departed from the airport, her family had gone to see her off at the airport. She is a resident of Modasa-Khambhisar village of Arvalli district.
Many passengers in the aircraft had their own stories story to tell. Among the passengers who lost their lives was Riddhi Godhaniya and her son Kriaan. The mother-son duo, who had previously lived in London, came to Porbandar to visit their family.
Another passenger, Syed Inayat Ali was in India for Eid-ul-Adha celebrations along with eight members of his family from the United Kingdom. All eight members of the family die in the crash. In the other case, Arjun, another passenger, had come to India to immerse the ashes of his wife who recently died in London.
Govt forms a high-level multi-disciplinary committee
Meanwhile, the government has formed a high-level, multidisciplinary committee, led by the Union Home Secretary, to examine the reasons behind the incident. The committee will also suggest comprehensive guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.
According to the ministry, the committee will not be a substitute for other probes by relevant organisations in the incident. The panel “will focus on formulating SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for preventing and handling such occurrences in the future”, it added further.
