New Delhi: The Indian Parliament’s Monsoon Session is poised to be a period of intense scrutiny for the Modi government. The opposition INDIA bloc, having held a virtual meeting to coordinate its strategy, is prepared to challenge the government on a range of significant issues. The upcoming session will see the opposition raise several critical matters. The Pehelgam terror attack, a highly sensitive issue, is expected to feature prominently in the debates.
Operation Sindoor, a subject shrouded in some controversy, and US President Donald Trump’s claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan following the operation, are also likely to be brought to the forefront. The Air India 171 crash, another sensitive topic, along with concerns regarding the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of upcoming elections, will also likely dominate parliamentary discussions.
Beyond these contentious issues, the session’s agenda includes the introduction of several key bills. The Income Tax Bill 2025, previously introduced in the Lok Sabha and referred to a select committee, is expected to be tabled again. Other notable bills include the National Sports Governance Bill, aimed at reforming the governance structure of Indian sports; the Geo-heritage sites and Geo-relics preservation Bill; the Mines and Minerals Development and Amendment Bill; the National Anti-Doping Amendment Bill; and the Manipur Goods and Services Tax Amendment Bill.
These bills cover a wide range of areas, suggesting a busy and potentially contentious session of Parliament. The all-party meeting called by the government, chaired by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, aims to facilitate dialogue and potentially smooth the legislative process, but the intensity of the opposition’s planned challenges suggests a politically charged session is ahead.
