Taking a big step towards implementing the election promise, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of Uttarakhand on Tuesday introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assembly. Once the bill becomes law, the rules on issues like marriage, divorce and inheritance will be the same for people of all religions. The special thing is that many provisions have been made in the UCC to make live-in relationships as systematic and safe as marriage. After the new law, the process of forming and ending a live-in relationship will be decided. It will be mandatory to register the live-in relationship and also to give it to the registrar at the time of ending it. This information will also be given to the police station. If any of the live-in partners is below 21 years of age, the parents will also be informed.
Women and children will get full rights
To make live-in relationship as safe as marriage, the woman and the child born from the relationship will be given rights in the man’s property. If a woman is left by her male partner, she can present her claim in the court demanding maintenance. A child born live-in will be legitimate. That is, like a child born out of wedlock, the biological father will have to maintain him and also give him rights in property.
provision for punishment also
There will also be a provision of punishment for not registering a live-in relationship within a month of its formation or for cheating by making false promises. Failure to register can result in jail term up to 6 months. If the live-in partner gives wrong information at the time of registration or any information is found incorrect later, then there is a provision for legal action.
