The Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi has been at loggerheads with the LG and BJP over the demand to induct more than 1,000 civil defence volunteers sacked from their jobs as bus marshals in the national capital.

Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj was seen laying down at BJP MLA Vijender Gupta's feet to convince him to meet LG over the bus marshals issue.

New Delhi: Dramatic scenes were witnessed outside the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s office on Saturday as AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj lay at the feet of BJP’s Vijender Gupta, requesting him and his fellow MLAs to go to the Raj Niwas to submit a cabinet over the hiring of bus marshals in the national capital.

While bowing at the feet of Gupta, Bharadwaj reportedly said he is ready to lay down at his feet if that makes the BJP leader bigger than him and convinces him to go meet the LG over the issue of bus marshalls, AAP leader Sanjeev Jhai claimed in a post on X.

pic.twitter.com/SQ0IFiVT5s

Reacting to the developments, AAP chief and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said he is proud of his leaders who bow down to anyone for people’s good.

“I am proud of my ministers who would fall at anyone’s feet to get people’s work done. I request LG Sahib and BJP people to not do any more politics on this issue and to immediately employ bus marshals,” he said in a post on X.

Bharadwaj and Aam Aadmi Party MLAs were later detained from outside the LG’s office after they protested over the bus marshals’ hiring.

Speaking to the media after being detained, Bharadwaj said, “today, the BJP has betrayed 10,000 bus marshals. Vijender Gupt has promised us that if we pass the resolution from the cabinet they will regularise bus marshals through the LG. But, today, both – the LG and BJP leaders have betrayed bus marshals and people of Delhi…”

Earlier at 10:30 AM, BJP MLAs went to meet Chief Minister Atishi at the Vidhan Sabha. The meeting was also attended by AAP MLAs, and a delegation of bus marshals. During the meeting, CM Atishi stated that the issue of reinstating bus marshals falls directly under the jurisdiction of the LG. However, in the interest and satisfaction of our BJP colleagues, the cabinet note regarding this issue will be passed and sent to the LG today.

The AAP government has been at loggerheads with the LG over the demand of permanently hitting more than 10,000 civil defence volunteers, who were deployed as marshals in public transport buses, and removed last year after the Directorate of Civil Defence raised an objection, stating that these volunteers are designated for disaster management duties.
