Savarkar was born on May 28, 1883 at Bhagur, a village near Nasik. He was a prominent freedom fighter, a poet and a political thinker. He is best remembered by his revolutionary activities against the colonial British government’s arbitrary actions and policies. He was a key proponent of the ideology of Hindutva.
Arrested in 1909 for his alleged involvement in revolutionary activities, Savarkar was sentenced to two life terms of imprisonment and spent several years in the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Several leaders from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also paid homage to Savarkar, with events held across various parts of the country to celebrate his widespread legacy.
On his 142nd birth anniversary, tributes poured in across the nation that stood testimony to his influential role in shaping India’s struggle for freedom and national consciousness.
