New Delhi: A tragic accident took place in Agra on the afternoon of June 3 in which six young girls drowned in the Yamuna River while bathing to get some relief from the scorching head, according to reports.
The incident took place in the Sikandra police station area and has sent the entire village into a state of grief and deep mourning. Officials have reportedly said that the girls went to bathe in the river after working in nearby fields and wanted to cool off after toiling under the sweltering sun.
As per eyewitnesses, the girls were initially seen playing near the riverbank and recording videos. After that, they decided to before venture deep into the river, and tragically, the strong current there swept them away. According to initial reports, four girls had drowned while two others were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, both succumbed during treatment. Thus, the toll of the accident rose to six.
All the girls belonged to the same extended family and from the same village located nearby. The accident has left the villagers shellshocked and in utter disbelief. The inconsolable family members gathered outside the hospital where the dead bodies of the girls were take.
The relative of one deceased girl said, “There is a farm near the riverbank where they were working. Due to the extreme heat, they went into the water to cool off. We had no idea such a tragedy would happen.” Once the news broke, the distraught locals rushing to the riverbank and informed the police. Later, the police, senior officials from the district administration reached the spot. It has been confirmed in the post-mortem examination that all six girls died due to drowning. The district administration has assured of providing required support to the grieving families.
