New Delhi: A special court on Friday (May 9) sent 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case accused Tahawwur Rana to judicial custody in Tihar Jail till June 6.
Rana was remanded to the judicial custody after he was produced before special National Investigation Agency (NIA) judge Chander Jit Singh a day before his custody with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) concluded.
Rana was remanded to judicial custody on a plea by the NIA.
Jail sources confirmed that Rana was taken to Tihar Jail amid heavy security on Friday evening.
“Rana was taken to the Tihar Jail after he was remanded in judicial custody. There was heavy security during his arrival and he will be kept in the high-security zone of the prison,” a source told news agency PTI.
Rana was extradited to India last month
Rana, who is a close associate of David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, a US citizen the main conspirator of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, was brought to India after his review plea against his extradition to India was dismissed by the US Supreme Court on April 4.
Court earlier remanded Rana to NIA custody
The court earlier on April 11 remanded Rana to NIA custody for 18 days and it extended his NIA custody by 12 more days on April 28 after the NIA told the court that he could spill the beans on the future terror plans of terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and its chief Hafiz Saeed for India.
The NIA also told the court that it was interrogating accused Rana in a “measured” manner, taking into consideration his health and opposed his claims of being questioned 20 hours a day. It also claimed that he was not cooperating with the investigation.
