Ahmedabad: Minutes after the Air India flight crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a statement confirming the incident and said that there were 242 people on board, including two pilots and 10 cabin crew.
Sharing a statement, the DGCA said, “Air India B 787 (VT-ANB) while operating flight AI-171 from (Ahmedabad to Gatwick) has crashed immediately after take-off from Ahmedabad. There were 242 people on board the aircraft, consisting of 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew. The aircraft was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar: Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).”
Several casualties feared
A large number of casualties are feared in the incident even though there is no official confirmation on the same yet. According to the police, the plane that was bound for London crashed in a locality near Ahmedabad airport soon after taking off. The aircraft crashed in the Meghani Nagar area of the city.
“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on http://airindia.com and on our X handle,” Air India posted on X.
Sharing further details, the fire department said that fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze. It said that several people were also taken to city civil hospital immediately after the incident.
Notably, large plume of black smoke was seen rising from the locality area immediately after the the incident. Emergency responders soon reached the site and launched rescue and firefighting operations.
