If you suffer from mental distress due to stress and anxiety, you can use breathing techniques to improve your mental health. These help reduce stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts. During pranayama, breathing is kept in a steady rhythm, which improves the flow of oxygen to the brain and helps calm the mind. Let’s look at the 5 pranayamas recommended by Baba Ramdev.

1. Anulom-Vilom

According to Patanjali Wellness, Anulom-Vilom is a powerful breathing technique (pranayama). It improves oxygen flow in the body and helps control blood pressure, calming the mind. To do it, sit in Sukhasana, close one nostril with your hand, inhale through the other, then close the open nostril and exhale through the opposite side, alternating in this manner.

2. Bhastrika Pranayama

Sit in a meditative posture, keep yourself completely relaxed, and slowly inhale and exhale in a steady manner. This activates the lungs, energizes the whole body, and also helps you feel mentally relaxed.

3. Kapalbhati Pranayama

As per Patanjali Wellness, while doing Kapalbhati, full attention should be given to exhalation, but beginners should avoid overexertion. This pranayama involves active inhaling and exhaling. It is beneficial for heart and lung health as well as mental wellness.

4. Bhramari Pranayama

Bhramari is excellent for mental well-being. Place both hands over your eyes, inhale with rhythm for 3–5 seconds, and chant “Om” during the process.

5. Ujjayi Pranayama

Ujjayi helps in calming the mind, reducing stress, and improving sleep patterns. It also benefits digestion and lung health. Sit in a meditative posture, inhale through both nostrils while slightly constricting the throat to produce a snoring-like sound, then close the right nostril and exhale through the left.
