New Delhi: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is all set to visit India later this month. India is hoping that he will visit the country at the end of August. The meeting between Putin and PM Narendra Modi is expected to lead to some significant results. The reports about Putin’s visit to India were confirmed by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval during his meeting with Sergei Shoigu, the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.

Putin’s visit amidst increasing US pressure on India over trade

The visit of the Russian leader comes at a time when India is facing increasing tariff threats from the US. President Donald Trump has already increased tariffs on Indian products entering the US market by 25%. This came after the US President warned India and asked the country to stop buying oil from Russia.

India on the other hand refused to back down. Just after Trump announced increasing tariffs on India, NSA Ajit Doval was in Moscow to discuss trade deals with the Russians. The move was seen as a clear signal by India that it was not ready to buckle under US pressure and follows an independent foreign policy.

Not only that, on Wednesday PM Narendra Modi himself waded into the entire tariff controversy. Speaking at an event he said that India won’t compromise the interest of its farmers. He added that he was ready to personally “pay a heavy price” for the interest of farmers of the country.

Trump has said that he would continue imposing fresh tariffs on any country which buys Russian oil. He said that the tariffs would continue until Russia agrees to end the Ukraine war, which is already in its fourth year now.

Meanwhile the Kremlin announced that Putin is all set to meet Trump in the coming days. The venue for the meeting is yet to be announced.
