New Delhi: In a telephonic exchange on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam reiterated their commitment to advancing the Enhanced Strategic Partnership between India and Mauritius. The two leaders explored avenues to expand bilateral cooperation across crucial sectors, including defence, maritime security, development partnership, capacity building, digital infrastructure, and cultural and people-to-people ties.

Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for Mauritius’s development aspirations, aligning with the Vision MAHASAGAR framework and India’s Neighbourhood First policy. He emphasised India’s commitment to deepening collaboration on shared priorities and regional cooperation, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. He also extended a cordial invitation to Prime Minister Ramgoolam for an early visit to India.

Key Indian Ocean partner

The conversation comes amid New Delhi’s continued efforts to reinforce its maritime influence in the Indian Ocean Region through initiatives like Vision MAHASAGAR — a policy framework aimed at promoting maritime security and sustainable development in collaboration with key littoral states.

Mauritius has long been one of India’s closest partners in the Indian Ocean, with cooperation ranging across defence, infrastructure, trade, and capacity-building. The island nation is also integral to India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) doctrine, which seeks to establish India as a net security provider in the region.
