‘Key partner in Neighbourhod First policy’: PM Modi, Mauritius’ Ramgoolam vow to deepen strategic ties

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said he had a “pleasing” conversation with his Mauritius counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam, during which the two leaders discussed strengthening the India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership and reviewed key regional developments.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “Pleased to speak with my friend, Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam. We exchanged views on further strengthening India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership and regional developments. Mauritius remains a key partner in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR and our Neighbourhood First policy.”

The conversation comes amid New Delhi’s continued efforts to reinforce its maritime influence in the Indian Ocean Region through initiatives like Vision MAHASAGAR — a policy framework aimed at promoting maritime security and sustainable development in collaboration with key littoral states.

Mauritius has long been one of India’s closest partners in the Indian Ocean, with cooperation ranging across defence, infrastructure, trade, and capacity-building. The island nation is also integral to India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) doctrine, which seeks to establish India as a net security provider in the region.
