Assam woman found dead in Uttarakhand after missing from Delhi

New Delhi: Five days after being reported missing from Delhi, Rosmita Hojai’s body was found in the Pauri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand on Tuesday.

A 25-year-old civil services aspirant from Assam’s Dima Hasao district had gone missing under mysterious circumstances in Rishikesh, triggering a massive search operation. She had travelled to Delhi for a Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exam on June 5th.

The devastating news of her death was confirmed on Tuesday by Debolal Gorlosa, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Dima Hasao, via a heartfelt Facebook post. Gorlosa expressed profound sorrow, calling it an “unthinkable loss” and extending condolences to her grieving family.

“It is with a heavy heart I share that Miss Rosmita Hojai, a resident of Sontilla Hojai, who had been missing since 5th June 2025 in Delhi, has been found dead today in Pauri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand,” Gorlosa wrote in his Facebook post.

“This is an unthinkable loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with her grieving family during this painful time,” he said.

He also voiced gratitude towards Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his support during the search and commended the Uttarakhand Police for their “relentless efforts” in uncovering the truth. Emphasising the need for accountability, Gorlosa vehemently called for “immediate and strict legal action” against the “two individuals involved in this horrifying incident,” stressing that justice must be served and such crimes must not go unpunished.

Investigations revealed that after her RRB exam on June 5th, Rosmita reportedly headed to Uttarakhand with two friends. According to a TOI report, she arrived in Rishikesh on June 6th with two male companions – former classmate Hemant Sharma from Haryana and another friend – for a planned camping trip in Shivpuri. However, by that evening, the two male friends reported her missing.

“I strongly urge the concerned authorities to take immediate and strict legal action against the two individuals involved in this horrifying incident. Justice must be served, and such crimes must not go unpunished. Let us all stand together to ensure safety and justice for every daughter of our society,” Gorlosa added.

A local resident later claimed to have witnessed a woman drowning near the campsite, raising fears that Rosmita might have been swept away. Following this, Haridwar police deployed State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) divers, who ultimately recovered her body on Tuesday.

While the circumstances remain under investigation, Pradeep Chauhan, SHO of Munkireti Police Station, confirmed that police are also considering the possibility of suicide.
