Stampede near Chinnaswamy: Karnataka HC allows State to file reply in sealed cover; adjourns hearing to June 12

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday (June 10), while adjourning to June 12 hearing on a plea initiated by it over the stampede incident near M Chinnaswamy stadium, asked the State to file its detailed response in a sealed cover.

A bench comprising acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice CM Joshi asked the State of Karnataka to file its response in a sealed cover after Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty requested for sealed-envelop submission.

Shetty, during the hearing, informed the court that a judicial commission has been constituted and it would submit its report in a month and that police officers have been submitted. He further submitted to the court that he has not yet filed the report and requested to submit the same in a sealed cover, saying any statements made in the case were being used by the accused in the pending bail petitions being heard concurrently.

The High Court had on June 5 took suo motu cognisance of the stampede incident that took place outside the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru where an event was organised to celebrate the victory of Royal Challenger Bangalore (RCB) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) final and had directed the state government to file a detailed status report.

Eleven persons lost their lives and 56 were injured in the Wednesday stampede incident, as a large number of people thronged to the Chinnaswamy stadium to participate in the RCB team’s IPL victory celebrations.

Another bench of the High Court is also hearing a plea challenging the arrest of Nikhil Sosale, marketing head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The counsel representing Sosale on Monday submitted before the court that the arrest of Sosale did not happen in view of any investigation, but merely because some directions were issued by the Chief Minister. The counsel, while challenging the arrest, argued that the Chief Minister cannot give directions for arrest.
