Raja Raghuvanshi murder case: Five arrested in businessman’s murder as wife mysteriously returns after 17 days

New Delhi: In a breakthrough in the grim murder case of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, Meghalaya police have confirmed the detention of four key suspects, Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi. Raj Kushwaha has been notably identified as the alleged boyfriend of Raja Raghuvanshi’s wife, Sonam.

This multi-state operation, spanning Meghalya, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, marks a crucial development in understanding the tragic killing of Raja Raghuvanshi and the perplexing disappearance and subsequent reappearance of his wife, Sonam. Police confirm that two of the arrested hail from Indore, while the third was picked up from Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh, with the search for one more accused still actively underway.

“Following sustained investigative efforts and multi-state coordination, three individuals have been apprehended in connection with this case, two from Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and one from Lalitpur (Uttar Pradesh). These arrests mark a decisive development in unravelling the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Raja Raghuvanshi and the subsequent disappearance of his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi,” the police statement read.

The distressing saga began on May 23rd when the Indore couple, Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, went missing during their honeymoon in Shillong’s East Khasi Hills. Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was later discovered in the dense jungles, while Sonam remained untraceable for 17 agonising days, fueling widespread concern.

The mystery deepened when Sonam Raghuvanshi finally reappeared in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. According to Uttar Pradesh ADG Amitabh Yash, Sonam contacted her brother at 2 AM, informing him of her location at Kashi Dhaba on the Banaras-Ghazipur main road.

Police swiftly responded, recovering her from the dhaba, conducting a medical examination, and placing her in a one-stop centre. She is now slated to be sent to Shillong, where the primary investigation will be taken over by the Meghalaya police.

The case has taken an intriguing turn with the arrest of Raj Kushwaha, which has prompted suspicion from Raja Raghuvanshi’s brother, Vipul. He stated, “I had no idea about those 3-4 people till the time I did not know their names. Raj Kushwaha’s name has come forward, which means Sonam can be involved in the murder. Raj Kushwaha was Sonam’s employee. They would constantly talk on the phone.”
