New Delhi: As the celebrations inside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium turned into a nightmare after the stampede erupted due to an unmanageable crowd to get a glimpse of the new IPL champions, Royal Challengers Bangalore, let’s find out the details of the venue where the tragedy happened.

Owned by the Government of Karnataka and managed by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), this iconic venue is named after Mangalam Chinnaswamy, a former president of the BCCI from 1977 to 1980.

The stadium was constructed in 1969 and initially served as a hub for first-class cricket. Its significance escalated in the 1974-75 season when it achieved Test status, hosting its inaugural Test match between India and West Indies. This historic encounter notably marked the debuts of cricketing legends Gordon Greenidge and Sir Vivien Richards. Since then, it has been a regular fixture for Test and One Day International (ODI) matches, including a major fixture during the 1996 Cricket World Cup. Since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, it has also been the spirited home ground for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Known for its relatively compact playing area, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium features short boundaries, with the shortest side measuring 51 meters and the longest straight boundary at 70 meters. These dimensions contribute to its reputation as a high-scoring ground, where batsmen frequently capitalise on the short fences for fours and sixes.

The stadium boasts a seating capacity of 32,000 spectators, ensuring an electrifying atmosphere for every game. Its pitches are also lauded for offering greater pace and bounce compared to many other Indian surfaces, often favoured by visiting international teams.

The Chinnaswamy has been the stage for countless unforgettable cricketing moments. In 1996, it witnessed Sri Lankan stalwart Sanath Jayasuriya’s monumental 340 runs. It also saw Sunil Gavaskar’s gritty 96 against Pakistan in his final Test in 1987, remembered against a challenging pitch. Sachin Tendulkar’s final Test match as India’s captain in February 2000 against South Africa also unfolded at the same venue. The stadium installed floodlights in 1996, hosting its first-ever day and night match, a momentous World Cup clash between India and Pakistan.

Strategically located on Kasturba Road, adjacent to the lush Cubbon Park and Queen’s Road, the stadium is highly accessible from all parts of Bengaluru via public transport. While parking is limited, its central position and passionate fan base ensure a lively and engaging experience, solidifying its status as one of India’s most popular cricket venues.
