New Delhi: The government is likely to dismiss the demand of the Opposition for a special Parliament session on Operation Sindoor. In that operation, the Indian Armed Forces destroyed terrorist camps and killed many terrorists in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir as a retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that killed 26 innocent civilians.
According to an NDTV report, the government is not considering the demand of holding a special session since the Monsoon Session will be held in July. As per the report, there is little possibility of considering the demand for discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Monsoon Session.
Earlier, the government stated that it has already informed the Opposition of all the facts at the all-party meeting on Operation Sindoor, in which India destroyed a minimum of nine terror bases in Pakistan and POK on May 7. Following that, Pakistan attacked India by launching missile and drone attacks and cross-border firings, but the Indian Armed Forces stood tall and neutralised all those threats.
Several Opposition leaders including those from Congress had demanded that the government should convene a special Parliament session to discuss its military and foreign policy in the wake of the Operation Sindoor. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has vehemently batted for an immediate special session of Parliament to address what he called “very important questions” surrounding the operation.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh echoed the same sentiment and questioned the government’s decision not to brief opposition leaders or hold all-party meetings about Operation Sindoor. Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also urged the Centre to convene a special session of Parliament so that people are informed about the India-Pakistan conflict and its development.
She took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “I am glad to see all-party delegation visiting various countries as part of India’s global outreach against terrorism. As I have consistently maintained, the AITC stands firmly behind any step the Union takes in the national interest and in defence of our sovereignty.”
CM Banerjee further wrote, “I urge the Union Government to convene a special session of Parliament upon the safe return of the delegation, as I believe the people of this great nation have the foremost right to be informed about the recent conflict and the evolving developments – BEFORE ANYONE ELSE.”
