India unveils indigenous ‘Surya’ VHF radar to track stealth jets like China’s J-20

New Delhi: Strengthening its defence capabilities, India has successfully developed an indigenous ‘Surya’ VHF (Very High Frequency) radar system. This advanced radar is capable of detecting even sixth-generation stealth fighter jets, which usually evade conventional radar systems.

Built at a cost of Rs 200 crore by Bengaluru-based Alpha Design Technologies Limited (ADTL), this radar is specially designed for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Its most notable feature is its ability to detect Chinese stealth aircraft like the J-20 and drones such as the Wing Loong.

The Surya radar operates in the VHF band, which uses longer wavelengths. This makes it capable of detecting stealth aircraft, which are typically invisible to standard radar systems. Unlike conventional systems, Surya radar can identify such aircraft with precision.

This radar system can detect targets with a radar cross-section of 2 square meters from a distance of up to 360 km. It can rotate 10 times per minute, providing 360-degree surveillance and wide-area coverage. Mounted on two 6×6 high-mobility vehicles, the Surya radar can be deployed easily in diverse terrains. It functions as a mobile unit and also includes 3D radar technology to detect low-flying targets.

Developed without any foreign technical assistance, this radar showcases India’s growing self-reliance in defence technology. It is fully based on indigenous technology and marks a major step towards a self-sufficient defence sector. Defence experts believe that integrating the Surya radar with India’s homegrown Akash and QRSAM missile systems could prove deadly for stealth aircraft like China’s J-20. Notably, reports suggest that China is planning to supply the J-20 to Pakistan. The Surya VHF radar reflects India’s technological self-reliance and strategic foresight. It can provide the Indian Air Force with a decisive edge in future battles, especially against advanced stealth aircraft.
