IMD issues orange alert for Delhi; Mumbai witnesses early ascent of monsoons

New Delhi: The Indian Meterological Department has issued an orange alert for Delhi on May 30, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning and squalls. Parts of Delhi received light showers on Thursday evening. Delhi has recorded a minimum of 29 degrees celsius.

In Mumbai, however, the early monsoons and the high humidity have led to an increase in respiratory diseases and various mosquito borne infections across the city. A report by the Hindustan Times says that Major hospitals reported a 20-30% increase in seasonal ailments, weeks ahead of the usual June-July surge.

IMD has also predicted a chance of light-to-moderate rainfall that is dispersed over parts of Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Up until June 2, isolated to scattered rainfall is anticipated over Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. On May 30 and 31, there is also a chance of  rainfall over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad.

Parts of Andhra Pradesh are expected to see thunderstorms for almost three days, from May 29 to May 31, according to the IMD. In remote areas of North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP), and Rayalaseema. Thunderstorms are predicted to be accompanied by lightning and strong winds of up to 50 km/h.

The IMD has also warned on Thursday that during the next two days, thunderstorms and light to moderate rain are likely to occur in various parts of Rajasthan. Over the next two days, there may be light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in certain areas of the divisions of Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Ajmer, and Jaipur.

A red alert has been issued for eight districts in Kerala including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Kozhikode, due to expected extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert has also been issued for six other districts, such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Thrissur.

The district administrations have declared holidays for all educational institutions in several districts on May 30.
