The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of lightning, gusty winds (30-40 kmph), and scattered showers, making it a day of contrasts across the state.

Mixed weather conditions: Rain in hills, heat in Plains

In the hilly districts, scattered rain showers have kept the weather pleasant, offering relief to residents and tourists. However, plains like Dehradun and Pantnagar have seen temperatures climb again, making conditions hot and humid.

Dr. Bikram Singh, Director of the Meteorological Centre, Dehradun, confirmed that while thunderstorms and rain will impact parts of Kumaon and Garhwal, the plains will experience clear skies and rising temperatures. The maximum temperature in Dehradun today is expected to reach 35°C, while the minimum may hover around 21°C.

Strong winds and storms expected in Garhwal and Kumaon

The IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds at speeds of 30-40 kmph, which may affect outdoor activities and travel. Some regions may witness localized rainfall, while lightning strikes remain a concern for those venturing into open areas. Monday’s temperature saw a significant rise, with Dehradun recording a high of 34.8°C, while Pantnagar hit 35.1°C. The hills remained cooler, with Mukteshwar at 22.7°C and New Tehri at 26.4°C.

Air quality and humidity levels

Despite fluctuating weather, Dehradun’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 78, falling in the satisfactory range. However, high humidity in the plains is adding to discomfort, with sticky conditions persisting in urban areas.

Weather for this week

According to meteorologists, light to moderate rain will continue in hilly regions through the week, offering temporary relief before the pre-monsoon showers intensify. The plains, however, may continue experiencing heat spikes, with temperatures gradually increasing.

Precautions for residents and travelers

Authorities are urging people in the hills to stay cautious during thunderstorms, particularly in higher-altitude regions prone to lightning strikes. In the plains, residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours. As Uttarakhand continues to experience changing weather patterns, the arrival of monsoon in June is expected to bring more stability, easing heat levels and humidity. For now, the state braces for varying conditions, with cool showers in the hills and rising temperatures in the plains.
