Mumbai: As a result of a low-pressure system formed over the east-central Arabian Sea off the coast of south Konkan and Goa, the India Meteorological Department (IMD)  has issued red and orange alerts across several parts of Maharashtra on Friday and Saturday.

Rainfall is expected to increase due to the low pressure near the North Karnataka-Goa coasts and is likely to intensify into a depression.  Due to low pressure, heavy rains are expected on the Konkan coast and the surrounding areas of Maharashtra. Although a cyclone has not yet formed, the depression may advance into a cyclonic storm depending on atmospheric and oceanic conditions in the coming days.

Goa receives Red alert

The IMD has issued a red alert in Goa until May 25, warning of extremely heavy rainfall for Goa through Sunday.  Konkan and Goa also experienced rainfall on Thursday. While Panjim (North Goa) recorded 9 cm.

The torrential weather is expected to continue for a few days in parts of Konkan, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. CM Pramod Sawant tweeted on X, ” The State Disaster Management Authority in the prevailing severe weather conditions is active with its 24×7 Control Rooms in both North and South Goa to monitor the situation and provide assistance.”

Orange alert in Mumbai

The weather department has issued an orange alert for Mumbai on May 23 and 24, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and turbulent winds speeding up to  50 to 60 kilometres per hour at isolated places. While places such as Raigad and Ratnagiri are expected to receive heavy rainfall have been put on red alert for Friday.

Also, the orange alert has been signalled in several areas, including Thane, Palghar, Sindhudurg and the ghats of Pune and Satara.  Following a light rainfall in  Mumbai on Friday, the weatherman has forecasted heavy downpours.

Delhi expected to receive light showers

Delhi had a murky sky on Friday with a light downpour accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.  Gusty winds with 40-50 kmph speeds are predicted late evening and night,  with thunderstorms and dusty winds. Wind speeds may reach up to 60 kmph in select locations.

As of April 24, Delhi is forecasted to have windy weather accompanied by light showers, with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kilometres per hour.
