Power demand in Delhi breaks 5 year record, demand crosses 7,000 MW

New Delhi: Delhi’s power demand peaked on Monday late afternoon. Reports said that the capital’s power demand touched an unprecedented 7,265 MW at 3:29 pm. This is the highest peak recorded on this day in the last five years.

Tata Power successfully meets peak power demand

Tata Power-DDL in a statement claimed that it successfully met its peak power demand of 2,136 MW on the day. They claimed that this is the highest power demand of this season so far and it was met without any network constraints or supply disruptions, despite the ongoing heatwave.

Talking about the month of May the peak power load has been rising year after year. On May 19, 2020, the power demand in Delhi was recorded at 4195 MW. Next year it reduced a bit to 3266 MW on the same day (May 19). However the very next year in 2022, it peaked at 7060 MW. In 2023 on May 19 the power demand of Delhi was 5518 MW, while in 2024 it was recorded at 7164 MW.

The peak power demand in Delhi is expected to reach 9,000 MW. An all time high power demand was recorded in 2024. The demand had reached 8,656 MV that year. Aparty from Tata Power, other electricity providers in the national capital, the BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited also successfully met the peak power demand of 3,004 MW and 1,479 MW respectively in their areas on Monday.

BSES discoms are equipped to meet power demand of more than 50 lakh consumers and 2 crore residents in South, West, East and Central Delhi, said the company in a statement. Power demand is expected to go up further as temperatures soar in the national capital.
