The recent surge in temperatures has left Dehradun grappling with intense heat, but relief is possible in coming days as the weather is about to take a sudden turn.

Orange alert for five districts

An orange alert has been declared for today in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh, cautioning people about heavy rain, hailstorms, and strong winds. Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for parts of Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Almora, Champawat, and Nainital, predicting gusts of wind reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h.

Activation of a western disturbance

The shift in weather patterns has been attributed to the activation of a western disturbance, which is bringing moisture-laden winds to the region. Experts predict that the erratic weather will persist until May 20, providing some respite from the relentless heat, before stabilizing on May 21. However, May 22 could witness another round of strong winds in multiple districts.

Despite cloud cover keeping daytime temperatures in check, the humidity and afternoon heat have continued to trouble the people of Dehradun and other low-lying areas. On Sunday, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 35.5°C, with the nighttime temperature rising slightly above normal to 22.6°C.

Rains and thunderstorms is expected in multiple districts today

Dr. Bikram Singh, Director of the Meteorological Center, stated that light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected in multiple districts today, including Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. Similar conditions could affect Tehri, Dehradun, Pauri, Almora, Champawat, and Nainital, while very light rain may occur in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar.

Residents are advised to take precaution

Residents are advised to exercise caution, particularly in hilly regions, where intense rainfall, hailstorms, and lightning are likely to be more severe. Authorities have urged people to stay indoors during peak storm hours and avoid unnecessary travel. With unpredictable weather ahead, Uttarakhand prepares for fluctuating conditions that could offer relief from the heat but also pose challenges for commuters and local businesses.
