New Delhi: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s P-North ward has issued a show-cause notice to actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty over alleged illegal construction in Erangal village, located in Mumbai’s Malad area. The notice, dated May 10, cites various sections of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, accusing Chakraborty of unauthorised constructions.

According to the BMC, two ground-plus-mezzanine structures, one ground-floor structure and three temporary 10×10 units have been built without prior approval. These units reportedly use materials such as bricks, wooden planks, glass walls, and AC sheet roofs—violating construction norms.

Mithun denies illegal construction

The civic body has warned that if a satisfactory response is not provided, legal action will be initiated under Section 475A and demolition of the structures may follow. Responding to the notice, Mithun Chakraborty denied any wrongdoing, saying, “I have not carried out any illegal construction. Many people have received notices and we are sending our reply.”

Social activist Nadeem Shaikh questioned why Mithun Chakraborty’s structures were spared, even though 24 illegal structures in the same area were recently demolished. The BMC has clarified that a total of 101 illegal structures in Erangal and surrounding areas are scheduled to be demolished by the end of May.

This is not the first time Chakraborty has faced such action—he was also served a similar notice by the BMC in 2011. The civic body has been conducting a crackdown on unauthorised constructions across Mumbai for several days now.
