Explained: How India’s Akashteer system foiled Pakistani drone strikes

New Delhi: India’s strike on 13 key locations in Pakistan, including 8 air bases, shocked defence experts across the world. But what has impressed them more is how India managed to stop Pakistan’s biggest missile and drone attack using its fully indigenous defence shield Akashteer.

On the night of May 9 and 10, Pakistan launched a major attack using missiles, drones, and loitering munitions. However, none of them could enter Indian airspace. Every single threat was intercepted and neutralised by Akashteer, India’s AI-powered, fully automated air defence system.

Akashteer is a product of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission. It was jointly developed by DRDO, ISRO, and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). It works in real-time, tracking and destroying incoming missiles and drones without human help.

It connects radar systems, sensors, control rooms, and air defence weapons into one powerful system. It collects and processes data from multiple sources, including weather and terrain,  and makes decisions faster than any existing system in the world.

This “intelligent defence wall” gives the Army Air Defence (AAD) forces a live air picture, helping them act quickly and accurately. While Pakistan used Chinese HQ-9 and HQ-16 systems, they failed to detect or stop India’s projectiles, resulting in huge losses. On the other hand, India’s Akashteer intercepted all Pakistani missiles and drones mid-air.

Experts are calling Akashteer a “seismic shift in modern warfare”, saying it gives India a clear edge over Pakistan. It is India’s first operational AI war-cloud, fully mobile and vehicle-based, making it ideal for fast action in combat zones. It even avoids friendly fire by clearly identifying targets and allies.

Akashteer is part of India’s wider defence network that includes ISRO satellites, NAVIC GPS, and systems from the Air Force and Navy. This seamless integration under the C4ISR framework (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) allows all three defence wings to work in perfect coordination.
