Lucknow: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday (May 14) refused to entertain a fresh plea seeking cancellation of Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha (LoP) Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship and a ban on his foreign travel during the pendency of his citizenship issue.

A division bench of the High Court dismissed the fresh plea as withdrawn after Petitioner S Vignesh Shishir from Karnataka sought to withdraw the petition.

High Court granted petitioner liberty to file a review petition against May 5 High Court order

The High Court, however, granted liberty to petitioner Shishir to file a review petition against May 5 High Court order disposing of his plea challenging Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship, saying the similar plea by him had already been disposed of by the High Court on May 5.

There was no time limit within which Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship issue may be concluded, Centre earlier informed High Court

The High Court on May 5 disposed of a plea filed by Shishir on the issue of Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship after the Centre informed the court that there was no time limit within which Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship issue may be brought to its logical conclusion.

“Learned Deputy Solicitor General of India has rather stated that the Central Government has not instructed him to spell out any time limit within which the citizenship issue may be brought to its logical conclusion,” the High Court noted in its order while disposing of Shishir’s plea.

High Court granted petitioner liberty to explore other legal remedies

The High Court, however, in its May 5 order granted petitioner Shishir liberty to to explore other legal remedies.

“We, however, clarify that the representation in the nature of statutory, made if any, may be looked into by the competent authority, in accordance with law,” the High Court said.

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has also filed a plea in Delhi High Court involving Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy has also filed a plea before the Delhi High Court seeking directions to the Home Ministry to decide his representation regarding Rahul Gandhi’s alleged dual citizenship.
