‘Proud moment for India’: Defence expert hails diplomacy’s success for BSF jawan’s safe return from Pakistan

New Delhi: The recent return of BSF Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw to India after his inadvertent crossing into Pakistan on 23 April 2025 marks a significant success for India’s diplomatic efforts. The incident, which occurred a day after the Pehelgam attack, saw Shaw detained by Pakistani authorities. However, the situation was resolved through a prisoner exchange facilitated by high-level talks and flag meetings between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers. This exchange involved the release of both Constable Shaw and a Pakistani ranger who had previously been detained by Indian forces.

Defence expert JK Bansal, speaking from Delhi, praised the successful diplomatic resolution. He emphasised that the coordinated efforts reflected the strength of India’s diplomatic and military resolve, calling it a proud moment for the nation. The exchange took place at the Atari border, approximately at 10:30 am. Following a medical examination, Constable Shaw was reunited with his family in West Bengal, where celebrations erupted at the news of his safe return.

The incident highlights the challenges posed by the lack of clear border demarcation in certain areas. While accidental border crossings are not unprecedented, the swift and cooperative resolution demonstrates the potential for diplomatic channels to de-escalate tense situations. This case follows previous similar incidents where BSF jawans and Pakistani Rangers have inadvertently crossed the border. Such instances often lead to negotiations and subsequent exchanges.

The successful outcome contrasts with current misinformation campaigns by China, notably through the Global Times, which has been promoting Pakistan’s version of events. This misinformation campaign has been countered by the Indian government, which has banned the Global Times X account and another news agency. Al Jazeera has also been warned for disseminating similar misinformation. India’s government has emphasised the inaccurate nature of these reports, citing the absence of any significant damage to Indian infrastructure or assets, in contrast to the claims circulated by these channels.
