Dehradun: In an inspiring show of patriotism, auto and taxi drivers across Uttarakhand have launched a heartfelt initiative—offering free transportation to soldiers returning to duty amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

The spontaneous effort, gaining traction in Chamoli and Dehradun, reflects the deep respect civilians have for the armed forces.

Local drivers sought ways to support military personnel facing urgent deployments

The movement began informally as local drivers sought ways to support military personnel facing urgent deployments. “They safeguard the nation, so this is the least we can do for them,” said Pankaj Arora, president of the Doon Auto-rickshaw Union, as nearly 100 auto-rickshaw drivers in Dehradun joined the initiative. Soldiers traveling from key transport hubs, including the railway station and Rispana bridge, are being provided complimentary rides—a gesture that has quickly become a widespread symbol of gratitude.

In Pithoragarh, a border district with strong military ties, taxi driver Bhupendra Singh has taken his commitment further. Inspired by his father, a war veteran of the 1962 and 1971 conflicts, Singh has personally transported over 50 soldiers from Pithoragarh to Delhi free of charge. “Their leaves were abruptly canceled, and I wanted to do my part,” he explained. Singh’s dedication is deeply rooted in his family’s military legacy, as his son currently serves in the Indian Army. “I always dreamt of becoming a soldier. Though I took a different path, this is my way of contributing to the nation.”

While a ceasefire was announced on Saturday, many soldiers continue to be redeployed, and drivers remain committed to helping them reach their units. Several vehicles now bear stickers identifying their participation in the initiative, creating a ripple effect across Uttarakhand.

Local authorities have acknowledged the effort, noting that it showcases the strong civilian-military bond in the region. With Uttarakhand’s history of military service—many families having generations of soldiers—the gesture resonates deeply.

Social media has amplified the movement, encouraging more drivers to step forward

The initiative has also sparked conversations about broader community-driven support for military personnel. Social media has amplified the movement, encouraging more drivers to step forward and offer assistance to traveling soldiers. Despite the logistical challenges, drivers express pride in their role. “Even if it’s a small act, it makes a difference,” said Singh, reaffirming his pledge to continue offering free rides.
