Chandigarh administration issues advisory for citizens amid escalating tensions with Pakistan

New Delhi :The Chandigarh administration has issued an advisory for citizens in wake of the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Earlier in the day air raid sirens were heard in the city, following drone attacks by Pakistan on Thursday evening. Sirens on Friday morning were meant to warn people to stay indoors and not undertake any unnecessary travel.

Restrictions in Chandigarh

The advisory issued on Friday evening put certain restrictions in place, across the Union Territory (Chandigarh). The first among these is a complete ban on using any type of firecrackers, bombs or fireworks in Chandigarh from May 9 to July 7, 2025. The restrictions are also applicable for weddings, religious events and any kind of celebrations. The decision was taken so that common people do not mistake the noise from crackers as a drone attack.

All coaching institutes catering to school students (up to Class 12) are closed in the city. Apart from this, on May 9 all markets and shops will close by 7 PM. However pharmacy stores will continue to function as usual. They will be operational, 24X7.

Strict restrictions have been imposed on hoarding and black marketing of essential commodities such as food ration, fuel like petrol and diesel and fruits and vegetables. Retail traders have ben asked to provide information about their stock to the Food and Supplies Department of Chandigarh Administration within 3 days.

The above measures have been taken after tensions rose between India and Pakistan, post ‘Operation Sindoor’ carried out by India. After missile strikes by India on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, the neighbouring country carried out drone attacks at several locations inside Indian territory. Their efforts however failed as Indian forces shot down all 50 drones sent by Pakistan. Ceasefire violations across LoC also escalated post India’s strikes.

Earlier India had closed the Attari border and asked all Pakistan nationals to leave the country. The Indus Water Treaty had also been suspended by India, following a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead.
