Srinagar: Ceasefire violations by Pakistan across the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir led to the deaths of 13 civilians and left 59 injured, said the Ministry of External Affairs. All deaths have been reported from the Poonch sector and 44 of the 59 civilians injured were also residents of this sector, they said.

Pakistan intensifies shelling post Operation Sindoor

The Indian Army in a statement said that Pakistan Army has been resorting to heavy shelling in several sectors along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir that was effectively responded to by the Indian Army. They however added that shelling from the Pakistan side increased following “Operation Sindoor” in which India struck terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

India struck 9 terror camps of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen. The camps hit by Indian missiles were located in Bahawalpur and Muridke in Pakistan and Kotli in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Though the Pakistan Army has been firing across the LoC ever since the April 22 Pahalgam attack, the intensity of the firings increased following the missile attack by India inside Pakistani territory on the intervening night of May 6-7, 2025.

Talking about the ceasefire violations from Pakistan, the Indian Army said, “During the intervening night of May 7 and 8, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked fire using small arms and artillery guns across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir.” The Indian Army responded proportionately to the shelling.

As tensions between India and Pakistan escalated, several schools in the border districts of Jammu and Kashmir were closed. Thursday was the second straight day when the schools were shut. Apart from Jammu and Kashmir, schools in Punjab and Rajasthan were also closed on May 7. Exams were postponed at the Jammu and Kashmir University.
