Operation Sindoor: Why PM Modi chose a symbolic name for Pahalgam counterstrike

New Delhi: On the early morning of 7 May, India launched a covert military operation codenamed “Operation Sindoor” targeting multiple terrorist organisations within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). This operation followed the deadly Pahalgham terror attack, prompting a swift and decisive response from the Indian government. The operation involved a coordinated effort by the Indian armed forces, successfully striking nine pre-identified terror targets. Reports suggest that these targets were significant operational hubs for terrorist groups.

One of the key locations targeted was Muridke, situated approximately 18-25 kilometres from the international border. This area is known to house a major base of operations for the Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based terrorist group. Speculation arose that the strikes may have also impacted locations linked to Hafiz Saeed.

The choice of the codename “Operation Sindoor” holds symbolic weight. “Sindoor,” the Hindi word for vermilion, a traditional mark of marital status worn by Hindu women, reflects India’s response to the nature of the Pahalgham attack. In this attack, terrorists reportedly targeted only men, sparing the women. The name, therefore, signals India’s commitment to protecting the sanctity of women.

The Indian government maintains that Operation Sindoor adhered strictly to international law, ensuring no harm to Pakistani military installations or civilian populations. However, Pakistan reacted strongly, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemning the strikes as an “act of war” and asserting Pakistan’s right to retaliate.

Operation Sindoor is notable as the third major cross-border counter-terrorism operation undertaken by Prime Minister Modi’s government, following the 2016 surgical strikes and the 2019 Balakot airstrikes. The operation highlights India’s evolving approach to counter-terrorism and its commitment to addressing cross-border threats. While the specifics of the operations’ successes remain subject to ongoing analysis and reporting, their significance lies not only in their military impact but also in their symbolic messaging.
