India showcases military power through IAF, Navy drills

New Delhi: India’s recent military exercises have drawn significant attention, demonstrating a clear show of force across multiple domains. The coordinated drills involved the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Navy, and the Coast Guard, showcasing a high level of inter-service coordination and operational readiness.

The IAF’s participation was particularly noteworthy. Using the newly constructed Ganga Expressway, the first highway in India designed for round-the-clock fighter jet operations, the IAF deployed a range of advanced fighter aircraft, including Rafale, Su-30 MKIs, and Mirage 2000s. These aircraft executed precision landings and take-offs, both during the day and at night, signifying a significant advancement in operational capabilities compared to previous exercises conducted on other expressways. This demonstrated the IAF’s capacity for rapid deployment and response, crucial for maintaining national security.

The Indian Navy also contributed to the display of force. The INS Surat, a state-of-the-art guided missile destroyer, successfully launched the Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MR-SAM). Co-developed with Israel, the MR-SAM boasts a range of up to 70 kilometres, capable of effectively neutralising a wide array of aerial threats. This successful test further bolsters Indias air defence capabilities.

The Coast Guard augmented these actions by reinforcing its presence near the Gujarat coast and intensifying joint surveillance operations with the Navy in the western waters. This increased maritime security posture complements the land and air-based displays of military might.

These large-scale military exercises occurred amidst persistent ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC). Reports indicated continued firing incidents in various sectors, including Akhnoor, Poonch, Nowshera, Kupwara, and Baramulla. Indian forces responded with precision strikes, retaliating firmly against these provocations.

The timing of India’s military demonstrations, in the context of these border tensions, has raised questions regarding the nature and intended message of the exercises. Whether these actions are purely a display of deterrence or signal a broader strategic shift remains a subject of ongoing analysis.
