Karnataka eases school admission age limit

New Delhi: The ongoing debate surrounding the minimum age for Class 1 admission in Karnataka is nearing its conclusion. For months, parents have faced uncertainty regarding their children’s schooling, following the implementation of stricter rules in 2022. These regulations, which mandated a minimum age of six years for entry into Class 1, resulted in approximately 500,000 students being ineligible for admission. This created widespread concern and confusion amongst parents and educational institutions.

In response to the significant impact of these rules, the State Education Policy (SEP) Committee was tasked with reviewing the policy. After careful consideration, the committee has now submitted its final report, recommending a significant change to the minimum age requirement. The proposed adjustment would lower the minimum age to five years and five months. This would effectively allow a considerably larger number of children to begin their formal education at the standard age.

The rationale behind this proposed change remains unclear from the available information. However, the SEP Committee likely considered the impact of the stricter rules on children and families, weighing the developmental readiness of younger children against the potential disruption caused by delayed schooling.
