BJP planned riots during Ram Navami, but failed; Waqf Act against federal structure of country: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tried to incite violence during Ram Navami in the state, but failed. Banerjee was speaking at a meeting with Imams in the state capital.

“BJP planned to engineer riots during Ram Navami, but failed; I will not allow division of people, I want unity. I came across news claiming role of elements from across border in Murshidabad unrest; isn’t it BSF’s duty to guard boundary,” said Mamata Banerjee while meeting with Imams in Kolkata.

Mamata said the Waqf (Amendment) Act was against the federal structure of the country. She said the Centre must speak on issues like growing unemployment, price rise of medicines and fuel.

“I appeal to PM Modi not to allow any ‘atrocious law’ and to keep check on his home minister. We will recall all anti-people Bills passed by BJP after dislodging it from power at Centre,” said Banerjee.

“They (Centre) should answer how many youths have got jobs? The prices of medicines, petrol, and diesel have been increased, but some ‘godi media’ only speak against Bengal. If you have to say something, come and say it in front of me and not behind me,” added the Bengal CM.

During her speech, Mamata urged people to maintain calm and peace at the time of provocation by anti-social elements.

“We believe in Sarva Dharma Samabhava. I believe in Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda… I request you to control if someone wants to create unrest in Bengal by getting agitated by BJP’s statement.”
