Former India cricketer Kedar Jadhav joins BJP to commence political career

New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Kedar Jadhav on Tuesday embarked a new journey in the field of politics. He joined the ruling political party Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) at the party headquarters (Maharashtra) in Nariman Point, Mumbai.

The Pune-born sports professional was welcomed by the state’s ruling party (in alliance with Shiv Sena) in the presence of Chandrashekhar Bawankule (Maharashtra BJP chief) and other leaders.

Jadhav played professional cricket for over 15 years, representing Indian national team at the international stage, Maharashtra state team at the domestic level, and five teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), including Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He 73 One-Day Internationals and nine T20 Internationals for India from 2014 to 2020.

“I bow down to Chhatrapati Shivaji. Under (PM Narendra) Modi ji and (Maharashtra) CM (Devendra) Fadnavis. The BJP is doing politics of development. With this said, I under Bawankule enter and join the BJP,” Jadhav said in Mumbai during induction event.

Bawankule said that Jadhav will contribute to the state in the sphere of sports and will visit corners of the state to understand the needs of the youth.

“He will tour the state and meet the youth. He will help strengthen the sports wing of the BJP in Maharashtra,” Bawankule said.

Jadhav retired from all forms of cricket from June 2024 with his last professional game being the Ranji Trophy match between Maharashtra and Vidarbha in the 2023-24 season.
