New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described the passing of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament as a historic moment. The PM who is in Thailand for the BIMSTEC Summit took to social media platform, ‘X’ to put forward his views on the historic Bills. He said that the 2 bills were an important milestone in the quest for socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive growth.

Will help people on margins: PM Modi

The PM said that the legislation will help particularly those who have for long remained on the margins, thus being denied both voice and opportunity. He further expressed gratitude to all Members of Parliament (MPs) who participated in the Parliamentary and Committee discussions, voiced their perspectives and contributed to the strengthening of these legislations. Furthermore, the PM went on to thank the countless number of people who sent their valuable inputs to the Parliamentary committee.

The PM said that the legislation reaffirmed the importance of extensive debate and dialogue. Talking about the Waqf, he said that for years it was synonymous with lack of transparency and accountability. This according to the PM harmed the interests of Muslim women, poor Muslims, Pasmanda Muslims. He said that the legislation by Parliament will not only boost transparency but will also safeguard people’s rights.

He said that the country will now enter an era where the framework will be more modern and sensitive to social justice.
