Punjab’s crackdown on drugs: Authorities raze trafficker’s property in Amritsar

New Delhi: In the vision of ‘Drug Free Punjab’, the District Administration of Amritsar knocked down a property of a drug smuggler. The demolition operation was carried out in the Makboolpura area, where an illegal construction built by notorious trafficker Gurmeet Singh was taken down on Tuesday.

This was acted upon the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann under the drug free initiative, said Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar. The police official said that Gurmeet was involved in drug trafficking actively and had three cases registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic (NDPS) at various police stations in the state.

According to the Amritsar Police Commissioner, the drug-free drive, staged between March 1 to 31, there were 125 FIRs lodged under the NDPS act, and 237 smugglers were arrested by the Commissionerate of Police, Amritsar. A total of 36.36 kg of heroin, 2.179 kg of opium, 5513 pills and intoxicants were seized. There were four properties demolished under the order by the municipal corporation (Amritsar Municipal Corporation).

Police appeals to citizens

Gurpreet Singh Bhullar further asked the citizens to support the administration and police in their fight against drugs and urged them to report the names of traffickers while ensuring that the identity of the revealers will be kept as anonymous. The motive was to take strict action against the offenders of drug-related crimes.

The ‘War Against Drug’ campaign was launched on March 1 with a five-member committee of cabinet ministers was set by the government for the crackdown against drug consumption in the state. The police officials in the state were assigned the task to identify drug hotspots, dismantle supply chains and take stringent action against traffickers. It also directed the police to seize and demolish properties of drug-traffickers. The plan of the Punjab government is to not just prevent drugs in the state but also rehabilitate the victims of it.
