‘Gaddar’ Row: Kunal Kamra granted transit anticipatory bail by Madras high court

New Delhi: Comedian Kunal Kamra, who is all over the headlines, due to a joke he towards Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has been given transit anticipatory bail by the District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate Court in Vanur, Tamil Nadu. Kunal Kamra approached the Madras High Court, in a view of seeking transit anticipatory bail, which provides temporary protection from arrest in a jurisdiction distinct from where the FIR has been filed.

The FIR was lodged by Khar Police in Mumbai, Maharashtra. In an earlier hearing, the Madras High Court had granted Kunal Kamra interim protection from arrest till April 7, 2025.

Justice Sundar Mohan has asked the comedian to appear before the Vanur court to formally confirm his bail. Following this order, the Vanur court granted the requested relief.

Joke lands Kamra in trouble

The dates back to March 23, when a stand-up performance by Kunal Kamra took place at Habitat Comedy Club in the Khar area of Mumbai. During the show, he mimicked a song from an old Bollywood film ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’ and made a satirical connection to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Though he did not mention Shinde by his name, Kamra referred to him as a “gaddar” or traitor, because of which he is facing sever political backlash.

In response to his performance, Shiv Sena workers damaged the venue showing their protest. A few days later, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) began demolition work on parts of the comedy club, which further drew the attention of the public to the incident.

Manny officers from Mumbai Police reportedly visited the registered address of Kamra after he failed to appear for inquiry.

In a recent development, the Madras High Court has asked Kamra to appear before it on April 7 for further process related to the conditions of his bail.
