K Annamalai, Nainar Nagendran or L Murugan: Who will be next TN BJP chief?

Even as alliance talks between the AIADMK and BJP gather momentum ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, incumbent BJP state president K. Annamalai may have to step down from his leadership post.

Nainar Nagendran: BJP’s power punch from the South

Nagendran is currently the BJP’s floor leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. A popular leader from the influential Thevar community in Tirunelveli, he holds significant clout in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. Formerly with the AIADMK, he joined the BJP in August 2017 and was soon appointed the party’s state vice president. His elevation as TN BJP chief could help the party expand its influence in the southern districts, which are considered DMK strongholds. The AIADMK-BJP alliance will need all the strength it can muster to counter the DMK’s dominance in the region.

Will Union Minister L Murugan come back to TN from New Delhi?

L Murugan, who served as the BJP’s Tamil Nadu president before Annamalai, was appointed Union Minister of State after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, given his proximity to the BJP leadership in Delhi, he could likely reassume state leadership ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls.

The BJP is expected to announce its decision between April 8 and 10, after the Parliament session concludes.

Annamalai’s Fate?

Annamalai—BJP’s dynamic and influential leader—holds considerable sway over the younger electorate. However, he is known for his contentious stance, and his controversial and aggressive statements are said to have been a key reason for the alliance falling apart in 2023, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP and AIADMK have historically been strong allies, particularly after the demise of former AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa.

Even when the BJP-AIADMK relationship was on shaky ground in March 2023, reports suggested that Annamalai, in a closed-door meeting, told the Central leadership he would step aside as Tamil Nadu BJP chief if they decided to continue the alliance with the AIADMK.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah and AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami met on March 25 in New Delhi. Since then, Annamalai’s tone appears to have shifted. In a recent interaction with reporters, he expressed willingness “to serve even as a cadre.” However, he has refused to address questions about the AIADMK-BJP alliance. While speaking to reporters in Coimbatore on March 30, Annamalai said, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke about it recently at a function. You can take that as the final view (of the party).”

Even as uncertainty looms over his leadership, Annamalai’s role in the upcoming Assembly elections remains undeniably crucial for the BJP.
