‘History can be cruel, but we must learn from it’: Congress leader Randeep Surjewala at WITT Summit

New Delhi: On the second day of TV9 Network’s WITT Summit, Rajya Sabha Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala spoke about the changes made in the party’s constitution and criticized the BJP’s approach towards history and governance.

Speaking about the role of district presidents, Surjewala said the Congress made major changes to its constitution during the Raipur session. He said that Rahul Gandhi was the party president at the time, and he himself was part of the committee. He stressed the importance of empowering district presidents, saying, “Whoever becomes the district president after the change, he should have an important and prominent role in it. We are trying for this.”

Surjewala also criticized BJP for welcoming leaders who once opposed them. Referring to some ministers in the current government, he said, “Those who used to use abusive language till yesterday are standing with PM Modi today. They have become his ministers.”

On Rana Sanga controversy, Surjewala accused BJP of distorting history for political gain. He said, “Every time we say talk about pockets, they bring out Aurangzeb. When we talk about history (cruel times), they say they want to change history.”

He also took a dig at Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, saying his government was focusing on irrelevant issues. “CM Devendra Fadnavis’s government is going to go and dig up graves,” he remarked.

Surjewala said that history may have been cruel, but people should learn from it instead of repeatedly bringing it up. “They keep talking about digging graves again and again, what will be achieved by this?” he questioned.
