Mumbai: Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse has raised concerns over women’s safety in Maharashtra after her minor daughter was harassed at a fair in Jalgaon district. The incident has sparked political controversy, with the opposition Congress attacking the BJP-led state government over law and order.

Khadse, a BJP MP from Raver, visited a police station on Sunday to file a complaint, accompanied by many party workers. “A yatra is held annually in Kothali on Shivratri. My daughter went to the fair two days ago and was harassed by some boys. I have come here as a mother seeking justice, not as a minister,” she told reporters outside the station.

Police action and charges

Deputy Superintendent of Police Kushanat Pingde said the accused misbehaved with several girls and clashed with their bodyguards when they intervened. Seven people have been named in the case and one has been arrested. Charges of molestation, POCSO Act violations, and IT Act offences, after the accused allegedly filmed the victims, have been filed.

Expressing concern, Khadse said, “If my own daughter is not safe, what about others? I will urge the state government to implement strict measures.” She added that crimes against women had increased and that many victims hesitate to report incidents. She plans to meet Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to push for stronger action.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal, who blamed the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti government for the deteriorating law and order situation. “Atrocities against women have surged. If Union ministers’ daughters are not safe, imagine the plight of common citizens,” he posted online, demanding Fadnavis’s resignation.

Responding to the allegations, Fadnavis said that workers from a “particular party” were involved in the crime and assured strict action. “The police have filed a case and made arrests. Those responsible will not be spared,” he said.
