In view of the Avalanche, the most sensitive districts are Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar. The Uttarakhand government has tasked the state’s disaster management department to study the past incidents of avalanche and work out a concrete strategy to deal with such incidents in future.

Mana avalanche incident is an eyeopener

The Mana avalanche incident has come as an eyeopener for the state government to deal with such a situation in case of rough weather. The search operation to trace the labourers trapped inside the snow at Mana village faced several hurdles due to the continuous rainfall and snowfall. While the communication system was not working properly, the teams of NDRF, SDRF, the Army, and ITBP faced a lot of problems to clear the snow accumulated on the Badrinath road. The Heli-services were also affected by the poor visibility during the search operation.

The state government to focus on avalanche incident in future

The Mana avalanche incident has apparently prompted the state government to give focus on avalanche incidents in future, besides the incidents like heavy rains, floods, landslides, and forest fire. According to a report, there has been an increase in the incidents of avalanche in the state in the past. Experts felt that climate change is causing significant changes in the weather. Usually there is heavy snowfall in the months of December and January. However, this time there was heavy snowfall in the mountains at the end of February month.

Prepare a database and study the past incidents of avalanches

Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the disaster management department to prepare a database of major incidents of avalanches in the state and study the same. Based on the database, the areas, which are sensitive to avalanches, should be identified.
