New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reportedly intervened, and US authorities are apparently expediting the emergency visa process to allow the family of the injured 35-year-old Indian woman Nilam Tanaji Shinde to travel to the US as soon as possible.

Sources said the Americas Division of the Ministry of External Affairs contacted the relevant US authorities, who are now reviewing the required procedures to fast-track the visa process for Nilam’s family, permitting them to travel to the US, according to reports. Nilam’s family had been seeking the Centre’s help to get an American visa quickly.

She is in coma

Nilam Shinde, hailing from Maharashtra’s Satara district, is fighting for her life in a hospital in California in the US after she sustained critical injuries in a road accident. The woman is currently in a coma. Her father Tanaji Shinde said that Nilam had gone to the US for higher education and was a fourth-year student at California State University.

Nilam’s family reportedly said that on February 14, she met with an accident while she was taking an evening walk. It was reportedly a hit-and-run case. The car rammed into her from the back, resulting in critical injuries to both her arms, legs, head and chest, the family reportedly said. Nilam underwent an emergency brain surgery. She was operated upon.

Earlier on February 16, the university had also issued a statement, saying that Nilam “is in critical condition with an uncertain prognosis and is receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit”. The university also appealed for travel permits to be issued for the family.

Amid all this, Nationalist Congress Party MP Supriya Sule had also raised the issue on social media and urged Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar to intervene in the matter.
