Mamata Banerjee sets target of over 215 seats in 2026 Bengal assembly polls

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that her party will win about 215 seats in the Assembly election set to take place in 2026. While interacting with her party office berarers, the Trinamool Congress chief claimed that her party would ensure a significant reduction in the BJP’s tally.

In 2021 Assembly polls in the state, TMC bagged 213 seats, while BJP could get only 77 seats.

“We will win more than 215 seats out of 294, in the next Bengal assembly polls and make sure the BJP’s numbers decline further,” said Banerjee.

The Bengal CM urged her party workers to work hard in their respective areas and ensure that the BJP candidates lose their deposits.

“In the 2021 assembly polls, BJP leaders said ‘200 paar’ but were defeated. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, they claimed ‘400 paar’ but they could not even secure a majority. What Abhishek (Banerjee) said is absolutely correct. We will achieve a two-thirds majority, but you must ensure an even bigger victory. This time, BJP nominees must lose their deposits,” she said.

Won’t leave TMC even if you slit my throat: Abhishek Banerjee

Responding to the reports about differences with Mamata, Abhishek said such rumours are spread by BJP to divert attention from real issues.

“A new illusion is being spread in the market that Abhishek Banerjee will join the BJP. Even if you slit my throat, the slogan ‘Mamata Banerjee Zindabad’ will still come out of my mouth,” said Abhishek Banerjee.

Abhishek urged his party leaders and workers to remain united as the saffron party will use all resources available with it to create rift within the party.

Echoing Mamata Banerjee’s sentiments, he called upon party workers to ensure a decisive win for the party.

“The fight to secure Bengal’s future has begun. We must ensure the victory of the TMC and make Mamata Banerjee the chief minister for the fourth consecutive time. Our goal is to win a two-thirds majority in the 2026 assembly elections,” he said.

With the 2026 assembly polls approaching, the TMC is focusing on consolidating its support base and countering the BJP’s challenge in the state.
