Ahmedabad: A fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday at the under-construction Sabarmati bullet train station, an official said. No casualties were reported in the blaze, which erupted around 6:30 am, according to the fire department.
Thirteen fire tenders were deployed to douse the flames, and the situation was brought under control. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), responsible for the project, stated that the fire occurred on the roof shuttering of a section of the construction site.
Preliminary findings suggest that welding sparks from temporary shuttering work may have caused the fire. “No injuries or casualties have been reported. While the exact cause is yet to be confirmed, initial indications point to welding sparks as a possible trigger,” the statement added. NHSRCL officials were closely monitoring the situation.

The Sabarmati station is part of the 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, which includes 12 stations across Gujarat (352 km) and Maharashtra (156 km). The planned stations are located in Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand/Nadiad, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

India’s bullet train project, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR), is the country’s first high-speed rail corridor. Spanning 508 km, it will connect Mumbai in Maharashtra to Ahmedabad in Gujarat, significantly reducing travel time from over six hours to around two hours.
The project, implemented by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), is being developed with technical and financial assistance from Japan. The train will run at a top speed of 320 km/h, with 12 stations planned along the route. Once completed, it aims to revolutionise rail travel in India, enhancing connectivity, economic growth, and technological advancement.
